2020PLUS HEAD DRAWS THE LINE BETWEEN
HOPE AND HYPE AT STAFFORDSHIRE EVENT
London, England: 6 October 2011 - Mal Fletcher, who heads up 2020Plus, the London-based international Think Tank, is to address a Civic Leadership Event in Stoke-on-Trent and will tell his audience that positive and effective change begins with leadership based on hope, not hype.
Managers can find it difficult to truly lead with the poise and strength necessary in our tough economic times, according to Fletcher, who says: “They mistake hype for hope and present people with only half-honest assessments of the challenges ahead. This results in simply insulting people’s intelligence and inviting cynicism and disloyalty.”
He adds, “The difference between emotional hype and hope is the difference between manipulation and motivation".
“Hype may sugar-coat a bitter-tasting pill, but motivation shows the benefits of swallowing the pill and moving on.”
At the Civic Leadership event on Thursday 13 October Mal Fletcher will discuss how to shape the future of the community through constructive and poised leadership, not through emotionally based hype which, according to him, provides only a temporary benefit, "doing nothing to inspire determination, audacity or persistence".
Mal Fletcher, an established speaker and broadcaster, will discuss strategies on how to identify major challenges facing Stoke-on-Trent in the decade ahead, how to proactively engage likely social change before it occurs and how to engage the innovative digital generation.
He will tell the audience of civic and business leaders: “In the face of challenges, people need to feel their leaders are entrusting them with unvarnished and up-to-date information. Fear feeds on disproportion, which is usually the result of misinformation and rumour – and these, in turn, are most often a result of poor or misleading communication from the top.”
The methods of positive change Mal Fletcher will be discussing, “represent a much more subtle approach to lifting confidence and in the long run they are also much more productive,” he says.
